Our Range of Motion Program

Huntington Home Care offers specialized range-of-motion exercises to proactively maintain and enhance a client's daily activities.

HHC caregivers are trained by experienced professionals to practice specifically tailored range-of-motion exercises to build healthier joints, improve joint lubrication, reduce stiffness and pain and consequently increase a client's independence.

Research has shown that daily attempts at range-of-motion exercise offers seniors the benefits of healthier joints, improved joint lubrication, reduced stiffness and pain, and consequently increasing independence.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Why use assisted range of motion exercises?
The joints and muscles of the body can become stiff if not moved on a regular basis. This can happen if someone is paralysed or confined to a bed/chair for an extended period of time.

Stiffness can be prevented by regularly moving the joints through their entire range. Range of motion exercises also help improve limb circulation, thereby reducing the risk of blood clots.

When should you use assisted range of motion exercises?
Range of motion exercises should be done at a convenient time. Early morning before the senior gets out of bed is ideal as the limbs can be limbered up for the rest of the day.

Range of motion can also be incorporated into the senior's daily care routine (i.e. bathing and dressing).

Where should you do assisted range of motion exercises?
The exercises should be done when the senior is in a comfortable position preferably lying in bed. This is the safest position for both the senior and caregiver. These exercises can be adapted to other positions (i.e. sitting).

How often should you do assisted range of motion exercises?
The time between sessions depends on how quickly the limbs stiffen up following stretching. If the limbs tighten up quickly, stretches should be done on a daily basis. If the limbs still move easily after a couple of days, the stretches can be done every second day or 3 times per week.
